Myall Lakes National Park, on the north coast not far from Newcastle, features one of the State’s largest coastal lake systems that offers countless opportunities for canoeing and kayaking, boating and fishing. The park also boasts more than 40kms of beaches that offer some good swimming and surfing spots.

Tea Gardens is a small town on the Myall River, just a short drive across the “whistling” bridge to neighbouring coastal town of Hawks Nest. Both are holiday towns whose population increases dramatically during summer holidays. There is plenty of good accommodation here, outdoor cafes, moored boats ready to hire and cheap, fresh oysters to sample.

With so many beautiful waterways surrounding Tea Gardens, you’ll never tire of outdoor action. Dolphins are likely to follow the small ferry from Tea Gardens to Nelson Bay where you can book in for a dolphin-or whale-watch cruise in season. Bennetts Beach near Hawks Nest is an ocean beach that’s popular for surfing, walks and fishing.
